Eleftheria Square
Eleftheria Square (Greek: Πλατεία Ελευθερίας).
literally meaning Liberty Square, is the main square in central Nicosia, the capital city of Cyprus, in Europe. It forms the intersection of Ledra and Onasagorou streets with Stasinou, Omirou, Kostaki Pantelidi, Konstandinou Palaiologou and Evagorou avenues.
It is considered one of Zaha Hadid's
Eleftheria Square
Previously the square was called Metaxas Square, in reference to the Greek statesman Ioannis Metaxas. It was renamed in 1974, following a competition held at the suggestion of the then Mayor of Nicosia. It is located in the center of the town below the Venetian walls of the medieval city. Nicosia town hall, located on D’Avila bastion, overlooks the square whilst Ledra Street leads onto its northern side.
Cats of Nicosia
In Cyprus, cats live for their own pleasure, often completely ignoring people.
According to legend, in the fourth century AD, Cyprus suffered a terrible misfortune. After a terrible drought that lasted 17 years, a huge number of venomous snakes bred on the island.
The Cypriots were so afraid of them that they even abandoned their homes in order to escape from poisonous reptiles.
The solution was found by the Holy Empress Helen, the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great, who ordered 1,000 cats to be brought to Cyprus on two galleys from Egypt.
According to legend, having arrived at the shores of the island, the cats did their job perfectly. They multiplied very quickly and in just a few years they caught all the snakes, thereby completely clearing the island and saving people from this terrible scourge!

Ledra (Greek οδός Λήδρας) is the main shopping street of Nicosia, located in its historical center.
It is named after the ancient city-state of Ledra. Since 1974, the street has been divided in two by the "Green Line", which is the border between the Republic of Cyprus, which owns most of the southern part of the street, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which owns the northern part of the street. Until April 2008, the street was blocked by a border barricade, after which the barricade was dismantled and the sixth border crossing in the country was opened. Located on the border, the former Ledra Hotel is the headquarters of the UN mission.
Ledra Street begins at the Freedom Square located near the city walls in the Greek part of the city and passes through the old city, ending with a fork to Arasta Street and Kyrenia Highway in the Turkish part.
