Larnaca
Larnaca (greek. Αλυκή Λάρνακας)
Salt lake near the southern outskirts of the city of the same name, one of the most important wintering places for birds in Cyprus and Europe. Flocks of flamingos, wild ducks and other waterfowl stop here.
Mackenzie Beach
The unofficial name of Mackenzie Beach in Cyprus is Airplane Beach. After all, the place has become popular due to the proximity of the airport - vacationers can watch planes taking off and landing.
The sand on the beach does not look very aesthetically pleasing - it is grayish in color due to volcanic origin. But on the other hand, Mackenzie Beach, like many other Cypriot beaches, is marked with the Blue Flag for cleanliness. Locals claim that volcanic sand has a healing effect - thanks to the minerals contained in it.
Mosque Hala Sultan Tekke
Mosque Hala Sultan Tekke, one of the shrines of Islam. Here is the tomb of Umm Haram, Muhammad's wet nurse. The architectural complex of Hala Sultan Tekke includes a mosque, a mausoleum, a minaret and residential buildings (female and male) for employees and pilgrims-dervishes (former inhabitants).
To the east of the mosque building, during construction work, fragments of a settlement dating back to the Bronze Age were discovered. Among the archaeological finds, it is worth noting the ceramics of the Mycenaean period, ivory objects and a scepter in the shape of a lotus. In 1978, a treasure was discovered near Hala Sultan Tekke with 23 items made of pure gold. The found values are exhibited in the Turkish fort in Larnaca.
On the second floor there is a specially fenced-off section intended for women. Previously, there was a separate staircase leading directly from the street to the women's section. But now Muslim women enter the mosque through the main entrance together with men and then go up to the place allotted for them.
To the left of the entrance to the garden, decorated with an Arabic inscription from the early 19th century, there is one guest house strictly for men, and to the right - another, divided in two - for men and women. In the eastern part of the monastery itself there is a cemetery of the Turkish governors of Larnaca and all of Cyprus.
The mosque was restored in 1959.
Larnaca Castle (gr. Κάστρο Λάρνακας)
Medieval Ottoman fortress founded by Europeans in the 14th century and rebuilt by the Turks in 1625 to guard the harbor of Larnaca. The castle is located at the southern end of the Finikoudes "Date Promenade" Promenade. Currently, the castle houses a historical museum.
Aqueduct Kamares (also Bekir Pasha)
Its construction began during the Ottoman period in 1747 and was completed in just three years. It was intended to supply water from the mountainous regions to Larnaca, for which it had to be built with a length of 16 kilometers. It was used for its intended purpose until 1939, until it was no longer necessary. Most of it was dismantled, leaving only a small section of about 200 meters, which became today's historical landmark.
Larnaca. Sea harbor.
